If you are planning a trip to the island, you are probably interested in knowing how many airports Tenerife has, and although it is a relatively small island, there are two airports through which you can reach this destination. The airport you choose will depend on your locality of origin.
Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofía International Airport)
The Tenerife South Airport, opened in 1978, is the one that operates the largest number of international trips, attracting tourists from all parts of the world who want to know the island. In 2017 it handled more than 11 million passengers, the seventh with the highest passenger movement in Spain.
It is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, a few minutes from Las Américas Beach, one of the most tourist destinations in the southern part of the island. Anyway, if your accommodation is located in the north of the island, there is no problem if you arrive at Tenerife South Airport, since there are multiple connections by guagua (bus) through which you can reach almost every town on the island. On many occasions, the tourist establishments book private buses so that as soon as you get off the plane you have transportation available to get to your hotel or apartment.
The number of inter-island flights is almost non-existent at the Tenerife South Airport.
Tenerife North Airport
The Tenerife North Airport, opened in 1946, is located on the outskirts of the university city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and operates mainly national and inter-island flights. It is the fourteenth with the highest passenger movement in Spain (more than 4 million and a half.)
This airport will be your best option if you are going to stay in the north of Tenerife due to its proximity to the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, as well as to San Cristóbal de La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz, just 20 minutes away. However, this option will most likely only be available if you come from the Spanish Peninsula or from any of the other islands (Canary Islands), since the vast majority of flights from outside Spain arriving on the island do so through the Reina Sofía International Airport.
Other ways to get to the island of Tenerife
But perhaps before visiting Tenerife, you have decided to visit some other of the beautiful Canary Islands, in which case you should know that you will also have the possibility to reach the island comfortably by boat, either to Los Cristianos harbour or to that of Santa Cruz of Tenerife.
