Surely you have never heard of the Bollullo Beach, although you have gone over and over again the tourist guides of Tenerife. And surely it was not in your plans to visit it, but now you have to make some time in your trip. The Bollullo Beach is one of the most charming places, and also the most unknown by tourists, on the island of El Teide.
It is a small black sand beach located on the north coast of Tenerife along with other small coves on the edge of the cliff. And you must choose it because accessing it is not dangerous, but it is an adventure.
How to get to El Bollullo Beach
If you have never seen how the mountains and the beaches merge as if they were one thing, La Orotava Valley will leave you speechless. It is here, in the northern part of Tenerife, where this fine sand beach is hidden, safe from buildings and residential areas, and with its unspoiled charm.
On the coast of La Orotava and a stone’s throw away from Puerto de la Cruz, you can reach the Bollullo Beach by a road surrounding of green banana trees called El Rincón (if you go by the northern highway, you must take the diversion to Puerto de la Cruz-El Rincón). You can go by bus, called “guagua” by the locals (line 376) up to a certain point, and then the road forks. The car can take you a little further, but the access to the beach is reserved for walkers. In addition, if you want to live an authentic experience, the best thing is that you wear good shoes and do the whole journey on foot.
It is worth it because the smell of sea, vegetation and banana trees is unique, and the coastal breeze that runs along the cliff and down to the sand, shaking the branches of trees, will make you feel completely disconnected. It is a feeling you have to experience.
Its aromas will take you back in time, when it was normal to live in the middle of nature and cars, noise and pollution were not as usual as today. And it is incredible to live all that without having to travel kilometers and kilometers, just one step away from the tourist area of Puerto de la Cruz and in the same municipality in which the Teide National Park is located.
The Bollullo Beach is the perfect place to get lost without getting lost, to find peace without having to look far away.
An authentic enclave
Perhaps because of that unique feeling locals love the Bollullo Beach and try to protect it as much as possible.
Perhaps because of that, because it is a perfect combination of natural elements, this small enclave (only about 400 meters long) has remained so real, so true, so authentic.
Perhaps because it remains hidden, because it is not visible to everyone or to those who are not willing to put on shoes and walk, it is still an authentic place, like the first day, and that is why you have to know it.
In addition, its authenticity is not only limited to the natural area, but it is also found in the people who frequent it, in its well-known lifeguard and in the chiringuito (beach bar) you can find at the entrance, where you can have a drink and enjoy as locals do.
An ideal beach for everyone
The Bollullo Beach has something special, you already know that, but what makes it the ideal place is that it fascinates all kinds of audiences: it is the perfect place for lovers of nature, adventure and adrenaline due to its heavy swell. However, those who are in search of tranquility and children can also have a good time on the seashore and play and walk in the sand.
Although its waters are not the most serene, you can relax because with regard to the sea nothing will happen to you. This is what the people of North Tenerife have always done and it continues to be their favorite beach. No one is deprived of a swim in the Bollullo Beach.
It is a beach to live it, to spend a whole day in good company or in solitude, because it welcomes everyone who comes to know it.
A must-see visit regardless of the season
Season does not matter. That is one of the wonders of these Atlantic islands, the weather is always friendly. Do not think you should cross out the Bollullo Beach from your list if you do not come in summer because any time of the year is good to visit this place. Spring and autumn are also ideal, and winter would probably be a good idea too.
And if it is cold and you are one of those people who do not swim if it is not too hot, this beach is perfect for a picnic day. You just have to change your towel for a blanket and the swimsuit for a sweater.
A tip: whatever the season, whatever the plan, stay to watch the sunset, because it will captivate you.
