A curiosity…
Let’s start with a curious fact, do you know where the name El Sauzal comes from? In its origins, the municipal capital was covered with willows, and hence its name, which was later extended to the rest of the town.
Where is El Sauzal?
The municipality of El Sauzal is very well located in the northern area of Tenerife, just 22.6 kilometers away from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is bounded by the towns of Tacoronte and La Matanza de Acentejo to the north, and by El Rosario and Candelaria to the south side of the island.
The Northern Motorway (Autopista del Norte), through which you can access the municipality, divides it into two distinct parts: the historical centre, which is below and reaches the sea, and Ravelo, located above and comprising part of the central summit of Tenerife.
Its geographical variety, from the mountain to the sea, already gives an idea of the diversity of landscapes it offers and its endless possibilities for tourist visits.
What to see in El Sauzal
As we have told you, El Sauzal offers countless places that you can visit and with which you can enjoy and learn, but we will highlight some of them, with different characteristics, that will help you to make a faithful photograph of what the municipality is like.
The coast of El Sauzal
The cliff of the coast of El Sauzal ends in crystal clear waters that delight all visitors, whether to take a dip or to take a walk and enjoy the views and the smell of the sea.
There is only one thing that you must bear in mind: the access road is a bit narrow and, therefore, you will have to travel carefully. But everything that is worth take a bit more effort, right?
Los Lavaderos
You will surely love this park-viewpoint because it is a haven of peace in an incomparable setting of very well maintained green gardens. And if you also like photography, you will enjoy as never before!
The space is so called because the town’s washing place was located in this area, which were refurbished more than twenty years ago to include the green areas that make up the current park.
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol
The Church of San Pedro Apóstol is the main religious building of the municipality. Founded in 1515, it was the fourth church on the entire island of Tenerife and, as a curiosity, Sister María de León Bello y Delgado, known as the Siervita de Dios, and whose body is still incorrupt in the Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena (in San Cristóbal de La Laguna) was baptized there.
It is worth visiting to get to know the religious side of the people of El Sauzal and discover its architecture (the current building dates from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries) and the statues found inside.
Las Calderetas
Las Calderetas is a great recreational area to spend a few hours with family or friends in the countryside, and has all the facilities for a perfect visit: tables, stoves and firewood, toilets, water, playground and even a parking area.
If you have more time, or you want a quiet and real plan, we recommend you a trip to Las Calderetas.
Las casas de la miel y el vino (the Houses of Wine and Honey)

And if what you really like is to enjoy the gastronomy and wine of the places you visit, then you cannot miss visiting the houses of wine and honey in El Sauzal.
The municipality is known for having many very important wineries, with Designation of Origin, which produce exquisite wines with fame beyond their geographical boundaries. At the Casa del Vino (House of Wine) you can learn all about the characteristics of the vine in Tenerife, taste its wines in the Tasting Room, and choose your favorites, which you can buy later in the store.
