Los Silos is a town in the north of Tenerife belonging to Icod de los Vinos, about 67 kilometers from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and has less than 5,000 inhabitants.
The name of this beautiful town of the north of Tenerife comes from three warehouses for cereals that were constructed by the founder of the locality, in the century XVI.
History of Los Silos
What we know today as the village of Los Silos, before the fifteenth century belonged to the part that was the Menceyato of Daute, when the aboriginal Canarians still populated and reigned in the islands.
After the colonization of the Canary Islands, this part of the island was occupied by the Gonzalianes family of Portuguese origin, and it was in 1570 when the first church in the area was finished.
It would not be until 1812, that, after the Constitution of Cadiz, Los Silos would have municipal independence and would have its City Hall.
What to see in Los Silos
Religious heritage in Los Silos
As is often the case in most small towns, religious buildings are the main attractions.
Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Luz
Built at the end of the 16th century and later renovated at the beginning of the 20th century where it was decorated with a new Neogothic facade and the characteristic central bell tower.
Old Convent of San Sebastián de Monjas Bernardas
This convent of Los Silos was founded in 1649, and in 1836 passed into the hands of the state, which is why in the twentieth century it housed the Town Hall. This former convent maintains its facade, as well as the cloister and wooden galleries.
Ermita del Calvario
A small and characteristic hermitage of neogothic style of century XX.
