Los Silos is a town in the north of Tenerife belonging to Icod de los Vinos, about 67 kilometers from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and has less than 5,000 inhabitants.
The name of this beautiful town of the north of Tenerife comes from three warehouses for cereals that were constructed by the founder of the locality, in the century XVI.
History of Los Silos
What we know today as the village of Los Silos, before the fifteenth century belonged to the part that was the Menceyato of Daute, when the aboriginal Canarians still populated and reigned in the islands.
After the colonization of the Canary Islands, this part of the island was occupied by the Gonzalianes family of Portuguese origin, and it was in 1570 when the first church in the area was finished.
It would not be until 1812, that, after the Constitution of Cadiz, Los Silos would have municipal independence and would have its City Hall.
What to see in Los Silos
Religious heritage in Los Silos
As is often the case in most small towns, religious buildings are the main attractions.
Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Luz
Built at the end of the 16th century and later renovated at the beginning of the 20th century where it was decorated with a new Neogothic facade and the characteristic central bell tower.
Old Convent of San Sebastián de Monjas Bernardas
This convent of Los Silos was founded in 1649, and in 1836 passed into the hands of the state, which is why in the twentieth century it housed the Town Hall. This former convent maintains its facade, as well as the cloister and wooden galleries.
Ermita del Calvario
A small and characteristic hermitage of neogothic style of century XX.
Heritage and cultural facilities
At the cultural level, Los Silos has its Alfonso García Ramos Municipal Auditorium, in which many events are held especially in summer. It was built in the 80’s, and can accommodate 800 people inside.
Sala de Arte
Continuing with the cultural facilities of the village of Los Silos, it is also worth noting the Sala de Arte Sebastián Pérez Enríquez, where paintings, photography and sculpture exhibitions are usually held.
Plaza de la Luz
The Plaza de la Luz has been, since its construction, the meeting place of the municipality of Los Silos. It is a place that, as in all small towns, has served for leisure and abundant talks among the few inhabitants of this small town in the north of Tenerife.
Around the Plaza de la Luz still remain the facades and structures of what were formerly stately homes.
But apart from its heritage, Los Silos is also an interesting place because of its natural surroundings, as well as the many trails that can be made starting in this beautiful village.
Some of the most traveled trails in the village of Los Silos are the PR-TF 55 Los Silos – Talavera – El Palmar trail, or the PR-TF 54 Los Silos – Las Moradas – Monte de Agua trail.
